“Back Yard Ritual" is a self reflective journey relative to the extended family constructs that contribute to my survival and existence".
The portraits as well as narrative pieces are shadows that spot my memory. Things that went unnoticed but are quickened in my memory through childhood are conjured up through strange familiar renderings of cut paper, photographs and pigment. These are the parts of growing up within southern Maryland, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C., that escape the conscious of my physical recollection of details.” Through stories told by McKissic’s elders and his own personal experience, this body of work aims to explores his urgency to release and recycle the narrative of home.
